The San Diego Padres play at Petco Park. Golfer Phil || Mickelson has joined a group trying to buy the ||franchise.Phil Mickelson said he is interested in becoming an owner of the San Diego Padres, according to a story published Monday by the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Mickelson, a lifelong resident of San Diego, confirmed that he has joined a group of investors trying to purchase the team. Five different investor groups have expressed interest in buying the team from majority owner John Moore. Moore has owned the Padres for the past 18 years.

Mickelson’s involvement would undoubtedly spark new interest in the team, which has under-performed for several years in the NL West. The three-time Masters Champion said he was joining a group led by the former Dodgers owner, Walter O’Malley, in a bid to buy the franchise.

"I've been talking to them about being involved with them, having an opportunity to invest in the team and being part of the ownership group," Mickelson told the Associated Press earlier this week. "I think it's a very good investment opportunity. More than that, it's opportunity to be involved in the community in San Diego, with something that gives the community a sense of pride. I feel like we can make the Padres a competitive team that can contend year in and year out, and we can do something for the community. . .It's something I've loved since I was a kid."

A sale could go through this year, according to news reports.

Mickelson said he would commit significant personal funds toward the purchase of the franchise and would want to be involved in team operations.

It looks like Lefty is starting to plan for his life after the PGA tour.
