Watson announced last week that he would miss the tournament to spend time at home with his family. Watson and his wife, Angie, recently adopted a baby. Watson tweeted: “The Players is one of the best weeks of the year, but I’ll be bonding with my son.”

Watson added: "I'm sorry to disappoint fans, but the Players has one of the best fields all year, and the tournament is more than fine without me. . .I feel blessed and excited that I get to spend quality time with Caleb and Angie in the next few weeks.”

The Players is not without a shortage of big names. Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickelson are battling the tricky course as is Rickie Fowler, who won last week’s Wells Fargo Championship in a one-hole playoff.

Watson will be back soon. In the meantime, as he tweeted after Fowler’s win on Sunday: “Wow! Golf is better than ever! Congrats Rickie Fowler.”
