Golf will again be an Olympic sport in Rio 2016.The sport of golf has now been played for over 500 years. This summer’s olympics did not see the club-swinging competition in action, but 2016 will be different.

Rio de Janeiro’s summer Olympic games in 2016 will include both golf and rugby after International Olympic Committee voting, according to pgatour.com. After a hundred years of absence, golf returns to the olympics. The last time the Olympics included the ancient sport was during the Olympic games in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1904.

But some golfers see last weeks extraordinary Ryder Cup as an indication that the Olympic games format should be changed. The Medinah Country Club in Chicago, host of the international team competition better known as golf’s Ryder Cup, demanded the attention of twice the audience as competing NFL programs played the same day as the finale, according to news.com.au. in which the European team overcame a four point deficit to upset the American squad and capture the Ryder Cup title.

The current Olympic format will see 72 holes in an individual stroke play tournament, with the lowest score earning gold, according to the Rio 2016 golf website. 30 countries are set to compete in the competition in Rio, which will be available online at rio2016.org.
